Pennance Vean Farm is a working farm of 20 acres with its small herd of pedigree Simmental cattle, who are all family members. The herd having been established in 1995, and our oldest cow is about to celebrate her 19th birthday!

As we use non-intensive husbandry, wild flowers abound in spring and the farm with is many Cornish hedges (stone walls with plants and bushes growing from them) is a haven for wildlife.

The ever changing bird population – swallows in summer, migrating birds in winter, our buzzards and barn owls are a joy to watch – especially the buzzards as they mew and wheel on the rising air currents.

The occasional fox and deer can be glimpsed crossing the fields – often playfully chased by the younger cows. Beatrix Potter would have approved of our cool rabbits as they lounge in the late afternoon sun!

We cut and bale our own silage for the cows’ winter feed and compost all the manure when they are in the yards during winter, returning it all to the land the following year. We pride ourselves on our healthy and long-lived animals.

In October 2010 we installed an Iskra 5KW wind turbine which will generate sufficient power to cover not only our needs but also enable us to export 40% of its capacity power to the National Grid.

As a working farm, we regret that dogs and other animals cannot be permitted as we maintain a strict bio-security regime to protect the health and welfare of our livestock.
